Showing Compassion through Poetry and Songs: PNP-HS Concert at the Park

"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For, ...I was sick, and you cared for me... "And the King will say, 'I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!”

Christians should, in an expression of faith in action, show compassion and spread encouragement to anyone especially those who are in dire need. For compassion and encouragement in the most desperate of times is water springing out in a barren wilderness. It floods a parched soul with overwhelming love. It drench with hope and hydrates with faith.

The Compassion Ministry of the CORPS Movement adheres to this biblical principle and in its weekly prayer and visitation to the PNP- General Hospital; the volunteers of the Movement encourage and share the gospel to the sick and in need PNP personnel.

The members pushed the envelope a little further, by conducting a mini-concert wherein they could encourage the sick and needy through songs and poetry.

PSS Renee Balagot, PSS Loida Bustamante, PS Bernard Banac and PSI Gus Ferrer in one of their prayer breakfast meeting, conceived the idea so they could further bless the sick PNP personnel as well as the officers and staff of the PNP General Hospital. They proposed it to PSSUPT Angela Vidal, Director of the PNP-Health Service, who in return approved since she saw that such event would indeed deeply touch her officers and staff. And since it was Woman’s Month, the group coincided the concert with the theme.

So last March 23, 2011 they proceeded with the “PNP-HS Concert at the Park”

The Pionso family, Ding, Abeg and Renee Dominique, showcased their virtuoso voice and dazzled the audience with renditions of Ikaw, Ugoy sa Duyan, Defying Gravity, Iingatan Ka, Hero and She under the Piano accompaniment of Mark Salazar.

But perhaps the highlight of the show was when Col. Bernie Banac and Capt. Gus Ferrer rendered poetry for the women of the PNP-HS. Col Banac rendered Nigel Mugamu’s Ode to Women to showcase the greatness of women in beauty and humanity.

Capt. Gus Ferrer on other hand shared some witty and inspiring advice for women out of Mary Schmich’s: Advice, like youth, probably wasted.

• Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreenwould be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

• Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.
• Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 pm on some idle Tuesday.
• Do one thing every day that scares you.
• Sing.
• Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.
• Floss.
• Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.
• Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
• Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.
• Stretch.
• Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.
• Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.
• Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.
• Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.
• Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

• Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

• Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.
• Travel.
• Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble, and children respected their elders.
• Respect your elders.
• Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.
• Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.
• Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.
• But trust me on the sunscreen.

Doc Gus ended with the best advice from the Bible for women who are also the chief “worrier” in the household.

"Therefore do not worry, saying ; What will we eat?' or 'What will we wear? For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” 

How a Bible Study Group Touched the World: Armlynk 2011 Vision Casting Visit

When Bernabe Boi Manuel, founders of Armlynk International, joined a small Bible study group in Camp Crame in 1994 they knew they were on to something.

At that time, the Bible study group, which will eventually become the CORPS Movement, was established as a refuge for those who were lonely, depressed and disillusioned with the police service. It was a safe haven wherein attendees could share their frustration and share their dreams to one another without any humiliation or reprimand. The two military missionaries witnessed the power of the Holy Spirit working in the lives of then PSI Cesar Binag, PSI MaO Aplasca, PSI Lyndon Cubos, PSI Bong Durana, PSI Tony Mendoza, PI Eric Noble and PI Bernie Banac in this bible study group. They knew that someday these young Christian police officers would definitely shape up the Philippine National Police and would someday touch the world.

Time came and went and these young officers indeed had an impact in the PNP. In 2011, God again used the ministry of the CORPS Movement to touch the world.

As all missionaries, Ron and Boi continues to desire the fulfillment of the great commission and they knew that if they share the collective experience of the CORPS Movement to other military personnel and missionaries they too would be inspired and would have ideas on how to develop their own platforms in ministry.

Last February 21, Mladen Bochukov, CCC Director and former Airforce commissioned officer and Captain Yasen Zhekov, an active police officer from Bulgaria; Major Lay “Savorn” Leav,  a commissioned officer Cambonian Army Tank Division and Sareth Duong, missionary and an Evangelical Representative to the Cambodian Senate Committee on Religious Affairs  from Cambodia; Col. Surasak Banjukeaw, a retired colonel for the Thai Royal Army and now a director for the Military Police Christian Fellowship of Thailand Foundation and Capt. Teerpong Tassabootr from the Thai Royal Navy of Thailand, Pastor Tinuyangba Imchen,  Principal of the New Life Bible Training Institute of India and Major Uk Chong a retired US Airforce and a staff of Cadence International in Thailand visited the Philippines to see how the CORPS Movement is ministering in the Philippines National Police.

They were first given a ministry orientation and a dinner fellowship by their host at the Summer Institute of Linguistic where they were also billeted. The following day they were received by Elder Mike Aspirin and the rest of the Joshua Ministry of the Greenhills Christian Fellowship and Federation of Christians in Government (FOCIG) wherein they were introduced to the importance of building a Christian Coalition for the Armed Services. Boi Manuel talked of the various platforms that are being utilized by the CORPS movement as part of its ministry like the hospital ministry, PNPA ministry, the Bless Our Cops program, My Brother’s Keeper program.

After their stint with the Coalition, they went to Camp Crame to visit the Project Management Office to witness how the CORPS Movement was also able to influence the PNP and its Transformation agenda. They meet with PSSUPT Jess Gatchalian and PSUPT Fred Obar who explained to them the Integrated Transformation Program of the PNP. They ended the day with the historical and memorial tour at the Camp Crame grounds.

 

The next day the foreign contingent was divided into two and visited the various outreaches of the CORPS Movement Foundation. Mladen, Yassen, Tinu and Uk were with Boi , Jojo and Ptr. Dan Afuang (JOSHUA) in Tuguegarao, Cagayan to visit PSSUPT Ma.O Aplasca while the group of Surasak, Savorn, Teerpong and Sareth went with Ron, Belle and Ptr. Jimmy delos Santos to visit PSSUPT Alfred Corpuz who was Provincial Director of Tarlac.

The Cagayan group visited the province of Apayao to have a courtesy call to PSSUPT Nestor Bergonia of Apayao with the pastors of the Independent Baptist Missions for Asians in Apayao under Ptr. Paul Tagoc. They also got involved in a blood letting exercise and had a chance to pray for Luna, Apayao Mayor Betty Verzola. That night they were treated by Mayor Aaron Sampaga who hosted the group at his resort, of Pamplona, Cagayan to various seafoods and delicacies of the Cagayan Province. 

The Tarlac group on the otherhand witnessed a BOC visitation program in Tarlac City with the CORPS  volunteers: Ptr Julius, Ptr Deo and Ptr Cris . They also went to Camp O’Donnel in Palayan City to visit Lt. Col. Dennis Pacis and see how he is involved in the Military ministry.

The next day, the Cagayan group conducted a Bless Our Cops Program in Apayao with the IBMA leadership under Dr. Richard Bitun, Ptr. Remigio Requizo (Police Ministry Coordinator), Ptr. Paul Tagoc and Ptr. Remigio Gonzales. In the program the different Chief of Police of Apayao meet with their local counterparts from IBMA.

The Tarlac Group on the other hand, witnessed the Compassion Ministry of the CORPS Movement at the PNP General Hospital lead by PNP-HS Comptroller PSUPT Bernie Banac. The missionaries were moved at the point of tears when they saw how pastor volunteers were praying over policemen.

The following day, the Tarlac Group visited the Light Armor Division of the Philippine Army under Col Essel Soriano. They saw firsthand how God was moving in the Philippine Army. The Cagayan Group flew back to Manila following a visit to the Callao caves and rafting at the Cagayan River.

The contigent was then again re-united at the Greenhills Christian Fellowship wherein they conducted a leadership interaction seminar wherein they discussed methods, materials and strategies for the Armed Services. Pastors from the Bless Our Cops program of the CORPS Movement also shared their valuable experience in dealing with the PNP.

The Next day, they were invited to the Philippine National Police Academy to be a part of the Sunday Worship service of the Cadet Christian Fellowship. Ptr. Raymund Go warmly received the group and even let the visitors lead cell group activities among the cadets. The PNPA leadership on the otherhand gave the visitors a silent drill as a gesture of thanks.

 

Prior to going back to their respective countries, the group wrapped up the trip with a visit to the Rizal Provincial Police Station to witness a flag-raising ceremony and Purpose Driven Life Seminar which is in partnership with the JOSHUA Ministry.

The CORPS Movement together with Ron and Boi Manuel of Armlynk hopes that visit here in the Philippines will be productive as these Christians are now empowered replicate what a simple Bible Study group did 16 years ago.

How a Bible Study Group Touched the World (2): Jesus Solutions and Initiative in Harvard

There’s also a Bible Study group in Harvard, Massachusetts which is also in part started by the same guy that started the Bible study group in Camp Crame mentioned above. Harvard which was founded by American Christian patriarchs to search for truth in light of Biblical principle has long strayed from its own ideals in favor of a secular one.

A group of students, including our very own PSSUPT Cesar Binag, gathered believers from different countries to look upon Christ as model of leadership, good governance and policy making. They started what it is to be known as the Jesus Solutions and Initiative which was recently been acknowledge as a student group in the campus and has recently meet for the first general assembly.

The group aims to introduce teachings of Christ as reform initiative that is still relevant and revolutionary in policy making in all countries around the world and in-trust each member to carry on the teachings of Christ to his or her own country.

The group is also looking forward for the next batch of incoming Christian students, which includes PSSUPT Bong Durana, to carry on what has been set.

Building Blocks of FAITH

The CORPS Movement has been instrumental not only in uplifting the moral and spiritual life of the Philippine National Police but also have been working hand-in-hand with several PNP units in establishing teamwork, strengthening camaraderie and honing leadership among its unit.

Boi Manuel who served as a spiritual adviser and as Chief Executive of the CORPS Movement Foundation developed FAITH blocks as development tool for police and professionals to further enhance their capability of having a proper perspective for work, adopting a healthy work ethics, working within the concept of team, harnessing the power of teamwork and mentoring.

The blocks has helped in developing insight within teams of the Aklan Provincial Police Station, Armlynk Internationals Leadership team and volunteers of the Bless Our Cops program of the CORPS Movement Foundation.

Last Month, Bro Boi. together with Jojo Dellosa and Dan Afuang conducted three FAITH blocks teambuilding session for officers, doctors, dentist and nurse of the Philippine National Police Health Service in a span of one month to build rapport and bonding within the Quezon City Police District- Health Service under PSUPT Jezebel Medina, the doctors of the PNP-General Hospital under PSSUPT Renee Balagot and the nurses of the PNP health Service under PSSUPT Loida Bustamante.

QCPD-HS: If We Hold on Together

Having a desire to unite her team as a cohesive unit in serving the sick and the wounded of QCPD, PSUPT Jez Medina started the FAITH blocks teambuilding at the Ciudad Christa Resort (9 Waves) in Montalban Rizal.

Being new to her team and having new members in the team as well, Col Medina wanted to have unity as well as a needed breather from their stressful routine. With her whole team intact, the group proceeded to Montalban with gusto and optimism.

After several hours of building and strategizing on the activities set before them, the change was apparent as they were all working within the concept of team and even appreciating each others strength and lifting each other in their weakness.

“In this event, we were able to discover one’s uniqueness and peculiarities. This activity brought as deeper friendship, personal growth and team dynamics. said Col. Medina.

 She added that it is all about cooperation which encourage teamwork and that it is imperative for any team to develop a climate of trust.

“Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, thinking together is unity and working together is success.” She summed.

PNP-GH: The Cure called FAITH

Next on line are the doctors of the PNP General Hospital under PSSUPT Renee Balagot. The training was almost impromptu as Col. Balagot initiated the activity as a “surprise” for the doctors and staff who have longed for something out of their usual routine.

All fifty one doctors from the different section of the hospital, although some came and went as they were on duty status. Nonetheless, after the event everyone had a new perspective of being a doctor and a police officer at the same time and everyone was more optimistic in the perspective of their jobs.

Bro. Boi challenged the doctors to dream bigger and not be bounded by their current assignment. He even challenged the doctors to be the Community Relations expert as they are first responders among all PNP personnel.

“We are thankful for the support of the CORPS Movement and also PSUPT Bernie Banac for this initiative.” Col. Balagot thankfully said.

PNP- HS Nursing Division

Finally, the FAITH blocks training engaged the Nursing Division of the PNP-HS under PSSUPT Loida Bustamante. The event was successfully handled by Jojo Dellosa and Dan Afuang who are the alternate trainers.

Forty nurses and midwives not only of the PNP-General Hospital but also of the nearby regional health service office attended the teambuilding session as they too were eager to build strong and united teams in their respective units.

“With this activity, we are more empowered and more united to achieve our division goals and for that we are thankful.” Col. Bustamante added.

The activity emphasized on mentoring and encouraging each other even in situations that are toxic and unbearable. The speakers also challenged their audience to have a perspective of Public servants in their field.

Sikretong Malupit!: Paano Manalo ng Lingkod Bayan at ng Ten Outstanding Police Ibubunyag!

Ang kasulatang ito ay minsan lamang kaya lubus-lubusin nyo na ang pagbasa!!!

May isang katangi-tanging pulis, isa nating kapatid sa CORPS Movement Foundation, ang nagtiwala sa manunulat na ito upang magsiwalat na kanyang lihim….

Sa pagtupad ng gabay na ito, nagkamit si PSUPT Eric Noble ng samu’t saring papuri bilang Hepe ng Santa Barbara Police Station kabilang na ang prestihiyosong Lingkod ng Bayan award ng Civil Service Commission at ang Ten Outstanding Policeman of the Philippines.

Ang mga kaalamang ito, na minsay “makabago at kwela”, ay magbibigay sa iyo ng karangalan  hindi lang sa iyong sariling kapakanan, sa iyong pamilya, sa iyong kommunidad at sa bansa kundi karangalan din para sa Poong Maykapal.

Ito na!... Ang 7 alituntunin upang maging isang katangi-tanging pulis mula kay PS Eric Noble!

1.      Makiisa sa iyong Simbahan- “Dapat ang simbahan at ang pulis nagtutulungan. Kung ang isang pastor ay nangangailangan ng kaluluwang ililigtas. Bigyan natin sya ng pagkakataon na tumambay sya sa detention cell ng presinto… Patanggapin yung mga nakakulong dun siguradong di sya ma-uubusan ng kaluluwa. Sila ang magiging tapat mong kaalyado sa lipunan at sila rin ang iyong “prayer warrior”….Naalala ko minsan muntik na akong ma-snipe buti na lang hindi tumama. Naniniwala ako may nagdasal para sa akin ”

2.      Maki-uso sa teknolohiya! “Nung ako’y hepe pa ng Santa Barbara, Pangasinan alam kong mahihirapan ang mga magsumbong ng harap harap kaya pina-uso namin ang pagsusumbong sa mga krimen sa email, text at facebook…yan ang Social Network Leadership!”

3.      Magbigay Galang sa Kinauukulan- “Kung isa kang hepe, malaking bagay ang supportahan ka ng iyong mayor at malaking bagay na makikisama ka sa kanyang proyekto mula sa malalkihang pistang bayan at kahit na sa maliliit na proyekto gaya na Oplan Libreng Gupit.”

4.      Libreng pagkain!- “Para mapa-buti ang imahe ng pulis, sumali dapat sila sa mga aktibidad na may “appeal” sa masa. Ang pinaka-patok ay ang Feeding Program! Sino bang humindi sa libreng pagkain!”

5.      Gawan ng Kabutihan ang Kapwa…Pulis! “Tayong mang unopirmado ang dapat unang tumulong sa kapwa natin unopirmado. Ang accomplishment ko sa Santa Barbara ay hindi lang ako ang nagtamasa kundi pati ang aking mga pulis. Sa katunayan isa sa aking pulis ang tumanggap ng Ten Outstanding Police Woman para sa nagawa ng istasyon.”

6.      Mag-isip ng kakaiba! “Hindi na uso yung mga speaking engagement sa kommunidad, lalo na kapag drug-awareness, crime prevention etc. etc. Dapat magpa-uso ka ng kakakaiba. Minsan nagpresent kami ng isang skit sa tulong ng isang Pastor, kung saan may gumanap na demonyo at anghel na nag-away sa harap ng entablado…Nabigla silang lahat! Di ba memorable!”

7.      Unahin ang Diyos- “Unahin mo ang kaharian ng langit at ang kanyang kabutihan at ang lahat ng ito’y ibabalik sa iyo.”

The Ladies of the Movement

Women play an important role within any organization including churches and faith based organizations. In the Bible, Paul ministry was supported by Lydia and women of Ephesus and Philippi. Mary Magdalene, whom Jesus first appeared to, and other women in the Gospel supported the apostles in their ministry even after the Ascension of Christ. Sarah and Rebeccah were supportive of Abraham and Isaac in building the nation of Israel.

The same is true with the CORPS Movement Foundation, wherein the faithful wives have been supportive of their husbands ministry and this year have taken an active role in ministering to fellow women of the police.

Agnes Binag and Tess Manuel, the better half of Cesar Binag and Boi Manuel, lectures on discipleship and leadership to women in uniform as part of the Women of Promise Ministry and the Military Christian Fellowship. They have been involved in a series of lecture in part of the human resource development programs of the Rizal Provincial Police Office. The ladies have both been part of the Greenhills Christian Fellowship mentoring classes were they are equipped with discipleship lessons to reach out to other women.

They are also involved in Geniuzkidz, a weekly children’s outreach program where they teach values and feed kids from ages four to twelve at the Binag residence. Since its inception last year, kids from all over Camp Crame quadrupled in attendance. Some kids visiting the Binag residence on weekdays. They are on the process of starting up a Vacation Bible School this summer.

They are also in the process of setting-up an officer’s wives discussion group where they plan to invite other women to discuss life matters especially on how to handle police husbands.

More and more women volunteers are also rising in Tarlac and Rizal that are ready to minister policewomen who are usually in the forefront of the Police Community Relations activity. The CORPS Movement is waiting for God’s opportune to raise a lady police officer to head this campaign for women.

The MaOist Doctrine: God-Centered, Service-Oriented, Family-Based

God-Centered, Service-Oriented, Family-Based Philippine National Police sums the aspiration and ideals of the CORPS Movement Foundation: a dawning vision of what could happen if Christ is the center of each policeman’s heart. Defined in it are the Movement’s focus areas wherein all activities are set and assessed.

The CORPS Movement’s mission statement, which sounds lofty to unbelieving ears, isn’t a buzz word that was conceived as a propaganda tool to influence churches and its communities to join side with the PNP but in all honesty a product of faith which dawned on one of the CORPS Movement’s founding members.

Entering as a young optimistic lieutenant who was accustomed to the routines and confines of cadet life at the Philippine Military Academy, Lt. Ma.O Aplasca’s knew that service in the Philippine National Police would require more dedicated attention and extra time from menial taskings, special operations to grand plans that would be intermittent to one’s schedule.

Such attention and time would take a toll to anyone who undertakes it especially to his or her family.

“Senior officers during our time would tell us that you could not have a balance between both, either your career suffers or your family”, PSSUPT Aplasca reminisced. 

Later in his career, he discovered that family life and a meaningful police service are not deterrents to one another but complements. By enriching both and strengthening each others’ bond, a balanced career is possible.

“In order to have a balanced police service you must approach it holistically by continuous personal development, having service-oriented framework and deep family groundings,” He explained.

He further explained that for three aspects to bond, all should be united like an equilateral triangle wherein equal focus, equal resources and equal time should be given. 

“First, a police officer should enhance himself be it academically, financially or professionally in whatever legal means,” he opined. “He owes it to himself and the organization”, he added.

He then added that a police officer has different “free” self enhancement courses (airborne training, sure shock, etc.), schoolings (career executive courses, master’s program, law studies) and other opportunities (UN Missions, PSSLAI’s savings offer, etc) that the PNP offer in a lifetime’s service.

“He should also have a service oriented mindset and see that everything he does is for the greater good.” He furthered.

He explained that in any police assignment, a policeman’s load would be easier if his objectives are inspired by the public trust which he or she has swore allegiance on.

“The family-based concept was added due to the fact that a lot of families were broken due to the hard-core dedication to the service.” He said.

“At the end of the day, they are the ones who you come home to and what is the use of your service if you do not have anyone to share it at the end.” He added.

But in the end, each aspect would still require time and dedication on their own and the equality that all sides require would burden each other and eventually break. Something or Someone must be in the center to hold the pieces.

“That is when we at the CORPS movement discovered that in order to have equality in the three aspects, you would need a strong center which will be the base of your police career and that center is God,” He expounded.
